Modern Functionality

My pieces include native hardwoods--from either Hawaii or the PNW-- carefully procured from sustainable sources. Nearly every piece also includes wood that’s upcycled from what some people see as trash—mostly forklift pallets and shipping crates. As you’ll see, I emphasize simple lines and mix wood species with abandon.
FURNITURE
Samples of my work--some commissioned, others speculative pieces that sold from various galleries. I strive to highlight the natural beauty of the woods used in my pieces, focusing on grain and pattern and other innate characteristics. The coffee table at the right was made from upcycled forklift pallets along with offcuts from other projects.

BOXES
I started making furniture in the early 1980s, long before the term functional art was coined. Unlike other art media, furniture must—first and foremost—serve a practical purpose. If it's a chair, you have to be able to sit in it comfortably. If it's a table, it has to be the right dimensions and shape for whatever use you plan for it. However, it can still be art.
